Coach Hopkins begins his 33rd season coaching at Mater Dei where he has coached numerous positions, including, but not limited to, to the Tight Ends, Wide Receivers and for the past eleven seasons, on the Defensive side of the ball.

John attended Pius X High School in Downey, CA. where he was a four-sport letterman, All-Angelus League and Athlete of the Year.

Upon graduation, John attended Washington State University on a football scholarship and was the Cougars starting quarterback and Team Captain. John and current Mater Dei Defensive Coordinator, Eric Johnson were teammates at WSU. John graduated with honors from WSU earning a degree in Communications with a minor in Business.

For the past 43 years, John has been in the Shopping Center Development business. John and his wife Stephanie have three adult children, Matthew (MD class of 2000), Shannon (MD class of 2002) and Thomas (MD class of 2005). “Pops” and “Nene” have nine lovable grandchildren ranging in the age of six to 1.
